Curious about DAFs?
What is a donor-advised fund (DAF)?
A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a philanthropic giving vehicle like a charitable savings account. Held by a foundation, trust, or public charity authorized to host DAF programs (like those listed above--most likely not your small local nonprofit like us), a DAF provides an immediate tax benefit to you, and allows you to easily support the Methow Conservancy and other charities of your choice over time.
How do DAFs work?
You might think of a DAF like a checking account for charitable giving. You make an initial contribution to open the DAF, receive a tax deduction for the full amount of the initial contribution, then use the funds to give grants to the nonprofits of your choice, over time. You can make grants to and/or add to the DAF any time you wish.
How do I set up a DAF?
DAFs can be easily set up through most financial institutions or a community foundation to serve as a flexible charitable giving vehicle. For more information on how to establish a DAF, contact your community foundation or financial advisor. The Community Foundation of NCW serves the North Central Washington area and the Seattle Foundation serves the Puget Sound area, but there are many community foundations in WA State to choose from.
What are the key benefits of DAFs?
- Tax deductions instantly: When you make a contribution to a DAF, you receive a tax deduction on the full amount, even if you spread out the grants you give over several years.
- Strategic Planning: You may choose to make your DAF contributions in years when you have a higher income to maximize tax advantages
- Simplified accounting: You receive one tax receipt for the full amount of your contributions to the DAF, so all your charitable giving (even if it is to many nonprofits) is reflected in one receipt.
- Estate Planning: Your taxable estate does not include DAF assets.
