Monthly Program:  Edible, Medicinal and Poisonous Plants of the Methow Valley

Rosalee de la Foret will help us explore everything from beloved natives to disastrous weeds and look at how they have been used in the past as well as today for the health and well-being of humankind. We’ll also look to the villains of the valley to learn what poisonous plants have to teach us. This informative evening will be full of pictures and tasty recipes right from your back yard.

The pub will open at 6:00 p.m. for attendees who would like to purchase drinks or something from the light menu.  The event is free and open to everyone.  Questions?  Contact Mary at 996-2870 or info@methowconservancy.org.

Hearth, Health and Home: A Halloween FUNraiser!
Friday, October 31st from 7:00 to midnight at the Grange Hall in Twisp
On Halloween night, join fellow community supporters for a Halloween Costume Ball and Community FUNraiser to benefit The Cove (Hearth), Aero Methow (Health) and the Methow Conservancy (Home).  Dance the night away to Terry Hunt's Rock Band, eat tasty treats by Chef Todd Brown and enjoy a no-host bar.  Costumes highly encouraged as there will be a prize for the best costume!

A ticket is needed to attend and all proceeds will benefit the three organizations.  The $30 entry ticket includes one drink ticket and sweets and treats.  Buy tickets at the door or through The Cove, Aero Methow, and the Methow Conservancy.  Pick the organization you wish to support, purchase your tickets through them, and they'll get 100% of the proceeds.  If you'd like to support the Methow Conservancy with your ticket purchase, call or email Emily today (996-2870) to reserve your ticket.  There are a limited number of tickets so get them quickly!  Ask Emily about volunteering if you are interested.

Biannual Newsletter
We recently printed our twice annual newsletter.  This paper newsletter is different than our monthly E-News.  Current members and other people who have specifically asked to receive it should have just received it in the mail.  If you would like us to mail you a copy, just let us know by email or phone. Committing to Community Conservation
If you’ve ever been a member of the Methow Conservancy, you should have recently received a membership renewal letter in the mail.  Thank you for your past support.  We hope you will consider renewing.

Your membership will help us work with willing landowners to reduce development in fragile areas and protect the wildlife habitat, working farm and ranchland, and scenic vistas that so define the Methow Valley.  You will also help us continue to provide educational programs that help all people—from one-time visitors to full-time residents—learn how to live thoughtfully with the land.

The Partnership for a Sustainable Methow is hosting a Cheese Making class on November 15th at 10am.Local cheese makers including Jim Salter will help you learn the art ofturning local milk into delicious cheese. $10 materials fee. Please pre-register by calling 509-997-1050.

Cabbage, photo by Mary KiesauThe Community Farm Connection is hosting an evening of local food, local wine, local farmers and live local music celebrating the bounty of Fall and this year’s successes at The Farmhouse Table in Wenatchee.  The event, “Some Enchanted Eating” is Saturday, November 1st from 6:00 -10:00 pm at the Wenatchee Community Center (504 South Chelan Ave, Wenatchee).  Local food will be prepared by Scott & Ruth Parsons of The Healthy Gourmet, Chef Amy Simonson of Stumbling Goat Bistro, and David Toal of Ravenous Catering.  Local wines from St. Laurent, Martin Scott and Chateau Faire le Pont, and beer from the Iron Horse Brewery in Ellensburg will be provided.  Tickets are $46 in advance or $58 at the door.  (Couples $85 or $110 at the door.  Children 0-12 free.)  Tickets are available at The Farmhouse Table at 112 N. WSU extension and EAT are hosting the 2nd Leeks, photo by Mary Kiesauannual North Central Washington “Farm to Table” workshop in Wenatchee on November 17th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  The free event is designed to connect local farmers to local buyers.  There will be panel discussions on distribution and meat processing, plus “break out” conversations on farm to school, value-added, agri-tourism, working with institutions, and a host of other topics connected to direct marketing.  The workshop is at the Wenatchee Community Center (504 South Chelan Ave, Wenatchee), and the doors open at 8:00 a.m. for registration.  Please RSVP and address inquiries to Joan Qazi of EAT via email  (jqazi@nwi.net) or call Michel Wiman of the WSU Small Farms Program at 509-663-8181 x 235.

Forest Primeval is our book club choice for November.Natural History Book Club
Our November book is Forest Primeval: The Natural History of an Ancient Forest by Chris Maser.  Our Natural History Book Club is no longer meeting monthly but we hope to continue providing you with great natural history books.  Stay tuned to E-News for each month’s book, and let us know what you think about a book or if you have a book to suggest.  See the previous books we’ve read at our Book Club page.

  • November 22nd: Twisp Holiday Bazaar, 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Twisp Community Center.  Look for the Methow Conservancy’s booth selling gift memberships, and organic cotton hats, tote bags and t-shirts!
     
  • December 2nd: Methow Conservancy 1st Tuesday - "Beavers ~ Nature’s water engineers,” 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. at the Twisp River Pub with Methow Conservancy Stewardship Director, Steve Bondi, and USFS Biologist, Kent Woodruff.

  • Join us for the annual open house & holiday social Dec 16th.December 16th:  Methow Conservancy Open House & Holiday Social, 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Methow Conservancy office on 315 Riverside Ave in Winthrop.  You are invited to join the Methow Conservancy for a bit of holiday cheer and festivities on Tuesday, December 16th at our annual open house.  Help us celebrate another great year of conservation and community.  We welcome the chance to thank you for your support this past year and to hear your thoughts about what you hope we'll accomplish in the next year.  Food and drinks will be available. 

  • January 6th:  Methow Conservancy 1st Tuesday - "Homegrown Ski Areas of North Central Washington” 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. at the Twisp River Pub.  Nancy Warner from the Initiative for Rural Innovation & Stewardship (IRIS) will present a 20-minute video on the history of the community-supported ski areas of our region featuring dozens of interviews conducted across the region last winter.

  • February 15th, 2009: The Owl and The Woodpecker: Encounters with North America's Most Iconic Birds, 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. at the Merc Playhouse in Twisp.  Join us at the Merc for an evening of stunning bird images with Yellow-bellied sapsucker, photo by Paul BannickSeattle-based photographer and naturalist Paul Bannick as we celebrate the release of his new book The Owl And the Woodpecker: Encounters with North America's Most Iconic Birds.  Paul will treat us to a slideshow featuring amazing photographs from the book, which profiles all 41 of North America's owl and woodpecker species across 11 key habitats, from familiar birds like the northern flicker and great-horned owl as well as rare ones such as the ferruginous pygmy-owl, red-cockaded woodpecker and northern hawk owl.  His presentation will provide an inside look at the way owls and woodpecker define and enrich their habitat and how the life-histories of these cavity-dwellers are intertwined.  The images will be accompanied by natural history information and Paul's field stories distilled from thousands of hours in the field observing owl and woodpecker behaviors.  A book signing will follow the slideshow.  The Merc will open at 6:30 p.m. for attendees who would like to purchase drinks and/or get great seats.
